Sovereign Grounds
Sovereign Grounds has been a staple for exceptional coffee and food in South Minneapolis since 1996. It is a family-owned coffee shop run by a family with Turkish roots.
Some of the things ownership wanted to convey in their logo was that this was a place that serves exceptional coffee where you could bring your family (especially children). The family atmosphere was key and involving their Turkish roots was important but not imperative. They take pride in catering to their customers. They have a playroom in the back for kids complete with a climbing playground. They wanted that incorporated in the logo somehow too.

Logo Design
Armed with this information, I got to work brainstorming. Incorporating a playground wasn't feasible. I decided an alternate 2-pronged approach to emphasize family while incorporating Turkish roots was to use the word "AILE" which is the Turkish word for "FAMILY". The machine that they roast their beans on was imported from Turkey. A unique thing they offer is a Turkish Roast coffee but not all their beans are Turkish Roast. Some are French Roast, Italian Roast, etc... Howerver, they are all Turkish Roasted. The 3 steam billows coming up from the cup represent the 3 sons of the founder and current owner of the shop.
I also designed some in-store signage for Sovereign Grounds to advertise their selection of coffee beans. I wanted to keep them clean, with an ornate Middle Eastern / Turkish feel. They were laminated so the owner could write prices with a dry-erase marker and change them as needed at the bottom of the designs.
